Over 1.8 million people have received COVID-19 vaccine shots worldwide so far: tracker | TheHill - The Hill

More than 1.8 million people have received the COVID-19 vaccine worldwide, according to Bloomberg’s vaccine tracker. According to the data gathered by the news outlet, China, where the novel coronavirus was first identified in Wuhan a year ago, leads the international community in the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered, with more than 1 million tallied as of Saturday.  At least 350,000 shots have been administered so far in the United Kingdom and 320,000 shots in Russia, the tracker shows.  ADVERTISEMENT The data also shows the United States, which leads the world in reported cases of the coronavirus as well as deaths, had 211,086 shots administered as of Saturday. According to Bloomberg, people in 38 U.S. states have received the shots. Data collected by the outlet shows Florida has administered the most shots, with more than 32,700 doses tallied, followed by Texas, with more than 26,000 doses, and New York, with 19,000 doses. The news comes a week after the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer and BioNTech was shipped out across the U.S. Bloomberg noted that a second shot must be administered three weeks after a person receives the first dose. Moncef Slaoui, chief scientist for the Trump administration’s vaccine initiative, said earlier this month that the federal government plans to have “about 40 million doses of the vaccine available to us and distributed in the U.S. by the end of this year.” “All in all, we hope to have immunized 100 million people which would be the long-term care facility people, the elderly people with comorbidities, the front-line workers, the health care workers,” Slaoui added at the time. “We will have immunized about 100 million people by the first quarter of 2021.”  The vaccine is 95 percent effective at staving off infection, clinical trials show. Distribution of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine, which received Food and Drug Administration approval last week, is also expected to begin this weekend.
