Macy’s store closings 2021: 36 Macy’s, 1 Bloomingdale’s to liquidate with most closing in spring. See the list. – USA TODAY

Will your Macy’s be one of the unlucky ones to shut its doors permanently?

A day after confirming more stores would close, the department store chain Wednesday revealed a new round of store closures. Macy’s, Inc., which also runs Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury, identified the 36 namesake stores and one Bloomingdale’s expected to shutter by or before midyear. The company also listed nine stores that recently closed.

The string of closures are part of Macy’s three-year plan to close one-fifth of its stores, or roughly 125 locations, which was first announced in February 2020, before the coronavirus pandemic led to temporary store closures starting in mid-March.

In September, Macy’s, Inc. Chairman and CEO Jeff Gennette said the timeline for permanent store closings could be adjusted as the company monitors the competition and the recovery from the pandemic.

Shopping malls at risk:  Malls were struggling before COVID-19 and now have more empty stores. What’s next after the pandemic?

“Retail today has been disrupted. And while that disruption creates challenges, it also holds opportunity,” Gennette told analysts during the September quarterly earnings call. “With many competitors closing or struggling, we see the potential to bring new customers into our brands and gain market share.”

Macy's plans to close 125 stores through 2023.

As of Oct. 31, Macy’s Inc. had 764 total locations, including 544 Macy’s locations, 54 Bloomingdales’s including outlet stores and 166 Bluemercury stores.

Some of the liquidation sales have already begun and most are expected to start this month and will run from eight to 12 weeks.
