Khandelwal named Dong-Soo Hahn Professor of Global Affairs and Economics - Yale News

Amit Khandelwal Amit Khandelwal, whose research focuses on the link between international trade and economic development, has been appointed the Dong-Soo Hahn Professor of Global Affairs and Professor of Economics, effective July 1, 2022. He is a faculty member at the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs and in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, in the Department of Economics. Khandelwal joins the Yale faculty from Columbia University, where he was the chair of the Economics Division at Columbia’s Graduate School of Business and where he held the Chazen Professor of Global Business chaired professorship. His research agenda examines the role of international trade in the economic development process. His most cited body of work has causally linked India’s trade liberalization to improvements in its firms’ productivity. He has also conducted field experiments in Egypt, Pakistan, and Myanmar to study the potential links between exporting and the economic growth that engenders. More recently, Khandelwal has analyzed the impacts of the U.S.-China trade war on the U.S. economy. Khandelwal held several editorial positions including co-editor of the Review of Economics and Statistics, associate editor of the Review of Economics and Statistics and the Journal of International Economics. Khandelwal holds affiliations at the National Bureau of Economic research (NBER), the International Growth Center (IGC), the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD), and Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). He received a Ph.D. in economics from Yale and bachelor’s degrees in economics and mathematics from Northwestern University.
